Darcy Alan Turnbull was fined $1300 for dangerous drive in Kawana Shoppingworld

Restaurant goers frantically called triple-0 and moved to avoid a Mooloolaba fisherman’s brazen burnouts near Sunshine Coast restaurants.

Worried restaurant goers frantically called triple-0 as a Mooloolaba fisherman sped around a Sunshine Coast shopping centre carpark billowing smoke and laying rubber.

Darcy Alan Turnbull was fined $1300 in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving a white Holden Commodore in the Kawana Shoppingworld car park on April 3.

Police prosecutor Mark Burrell told the court six triple-0 calls were received from concerned restaurant goers as Turnbull sped around the car park at 7:30pm.

Senior Constable Burrell said Turnbull travelled through a pedestrian crossing at speed while revving his car and causing smoke to billow from the wheel arches.

Three minutes later patrons, scared for their safety, were forced to move places as Turnbull did another burnout in front of the restaurants.

Constable Burrell said Turnbull left black skid marks on the road.

He said Turnbull put many people in danger and suggested a substantial fine or community service as appropriate punishments.

The court heard the 22-year-old had three pages of traffic history and two pages of criminal history.

Turnbull originally denied driving the car when police attended his house.

Unrepresented Turnbull said he felt bad for putting shoppers in danger.

“It was just a lack of self control and stupidity,” he said.

“I regret what I did that day.”

The Mooloolaba fisherman said he would be able to complete some community service for one month while on holidays, but could also pay a fine.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said any punishment given to Turnbull had to reflect the seriousness of his behaviour.

Turnbull was disqualified from driving for six months.

He had driven his car to court, but told Mr Stjernqvist he would get a mate to pick him up.

Convictions were recorded.
