A mum who died after a horror three-car crash on a Sunshine Coast road is being remembered as a selfless individual who loved her two children.
Initial police investigations indicate Fitzgibbon resident Aki Fukunaga, 45, was driving a Honda Jazz on Kawana Way Link Rd at Meridan Plains about 8.45am when a collision on the other side of the road sent a Kia Sorrento into her path.
She was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, on February 20, but later died.
Ms Fukunaga’s friend Kristin Belsham said it was that same Honda Jazz in which the mum-of-two spent countless hours ferrying her children, aged 15 and 13, to dance practice, soccer training, eisteddfods, games and more.
“She was so proud to see (her children) doing well,” Ms Belsham said.
Ms Belsham was still coming to terms with the loss of her friend.
She said the day after the crash, classes were suspended at Attitude Dance Academy where Ms Fukunaga worked and parents and students who had met her over the past decade gathered.
“A beautiful photo of Aki, and flowers, were at the desk where she used to sit,” Ms Belsham said.
She said she would miss her friend’s parenting advice, her selflessness and spending time with her.
Ms Belsham said Ms Fukunaga was a rare person who spent time teaching others to do things for themselves.
She said a cherished memory was of the pair cooking food for Ms Belsham’s young son “for hours” and she would cherish a recipe that the Japanese woman taught her for rissoles that her children loved.
The soccer and dancing communities that Ms Fukunaga was part of have rallied behind her teenagers as they grieve their mum.
Ms Belsham has started a GoFundMe to ensure her friend’s children are supported, which has so far raised $34,740 of its $500,000 goal.
Ms Fukunaga’s daughter has started dance training full-time on the Sunshine Coast and her school, Dance Edge Studios, will hold a presentation as a fundraiser too.
