Dallas Brian John Spillane caught disqualified driving again

A Tewantin man who has received ‘every sentence under the sun’ for disqualified driving made a daring escape from police after he was spotted yet again behind the wheel.

Australia's Court System

A 36-year-old Tewantin man has been disqualified from ever driving a car after he was busted for the 17th time behind the wheel, this time evading police.

Dallas Brian John Spillane pleaded guilty to an array of driving and drug offences he had racked up over a two-month period between 2021-2022.

Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard the former fruit picker had been travelling along Memorial Dr in Eerwah Vale on November 15, 2021 when he drove without due care and attention.

His next brush with the law occurred on January 10, 2022 when he was located by police behind the wheel again along George St in Tewantin.

Police prosecutor Lee Allen said the 35-year-old evaded police and wasn’t arrested until January 27, 2022 when he was found with a small amount of marijuana and a bong in Tewantin.

The court was told both times Spillane had been disqualified absolutely from driving and had been in custody since his arrest.

Senior Constable Allen said the former fruit picker had been convicted of disqualified driving 17 times, driving unlicensed eight times and dangerous driving five times.

He even told the court of Spillane’s previous sentence in Maroochydore District Court in 2019 where he nearly drove into an oncoming car in Lake Macdonald while travelling 80km/h in a 20km/h zone.

Defence lawyer Liesel Rogan said she was instructed by Spillane in simpler terms that he had made a “big mistake” by driving continuously while disqualified.

Magistrate Raelene Ellis wasn’t having any of Spillane’s remorse due to the sheer amount of times he had disobeyed court orders and had received “every sentence under the sun”.

“You put people in our community at risk by your driving behaviour, it’s bad enough that you drive without a licence but then you drive in a manner that puts lives at risk,” she said.

“You’re not going to stop.”

Spillane pleaded guilty to two counts of driving disqualified and one of evasion, possessing utensils, drugs and using a number plate attached granted for another vehicle and was sentenced to 18 months’ jail.

His parole eligibility date was set for September 7, 2022, with convictions recorded.

The 35-year-old was also disqualified from driving absolutely once again.
