A dad of four daughters walked from court with his head down after being sentenced for molesting a 16-year-old girl who was robbed of a say in her first sexual encounter.

The teenager said she could remember the smell of bourbon on Darren John Ainsworth's breath as he repeatedly groped her while she tried to sleep at a Sunshine Coast home on October 12 last year.

Ainsworth, 44, was not related to the girl and had only met her the night before.

Maroochydore District Court on Thursday heard he had been out drinking in Caloundra on October 11 and consumed up to 10 drinks before returning to the address.

The girl woke about 4am to Ainsworth touching her breasts over her shirt and she rolled over several times trying to block his attempts.

Crown prosecutor Alex Stark said it was to no avail and Ainsworth proceeded to rub her back and breasts under her shirt.

"That proceeded down towards her buttocks and he moved his hand into the pants line of her shorts and rubbed and grabbed her buttocks over her shorts," Mr Stark said.

She rolled onto her side and covered her chest with her hands.

"Unfortunately he persisted and placed his hand over the front of her shorts and touched her vagina over her shorts," Mr Stark said.

"He placed his hand onto the side of her shorts and attempted to move his hand under her underwear.

"She however continued to roll about preventing him from placing his hand underneath her underwear."

The girl recognised it was the Ainsworth when he leant over and kissed her, saying "hi".

She left the home and called her family to disclose what happened.

Mr Stark said the girl was too overwhelmed to write a victim impact statement, however, statements from her mum and sister were tendered to the court.

They spoke of the 16-year-old wanting breast reduction surgery after her assault.

"As the sister says, it was her first ever sexual experience in some way and it's appalling to get drunk and behave like this," Judge David Reid.

"It's not only bad, it's just so selfish."

The court heard the girl had received one session of counselling but found it too confronting to return.

Ainsworth had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault.

He had no criminal history.

Defence barrister Bruce Mumford said his client was "significantly affected" by alcohol at the time.

"So what?" Judge Reid said.

"You and I could go and have a few beers Mr Mumford and you don't go and do this stuff."

Mr Mumford said the alcohol didn't excuse his client's behaviour, but explained it.

He said Ainsworth had three biological daughters to his ex-wife and he cared for his current partner's three-week old girl.

He said the 44-year-old had worked as a supermarket manager with Woolworths and Aldi for about two decades.

"For the last two years he had been the owner-operator of a dine-in restaurant at North Lakes in outer Brisbane," Mr Mumford said.

Judge Reid said Ainsworth would have been sentenced to actual jail time had the girl been five months younger.

"Disgracefully, you are the father of four daughters," he told Ainsworth.

"Imagine, yourself, how you would feel if you came home and (someone) had done something like this to one of your daughters.

"You would be outraged I'm sure."

Ainsworth was sentenced to nine months in jail, suspended for 18 months.

Upon leaving court, the defence team brought a Range Rover around the front of the courthouse to collect Ainsworth.

He made a swift exit from the courthouse with his head down and his phone to his ear.
