Australia's opioid crisis: "We have an epidemic on our hands"

A Golden Beach jeweller turned herself in to the cops after her mate was found with her drug bag which was filled with a “concoction” of narcotics.

Alix Marina Johnstone, 40, received probation after she was sentenced on several drug charges following a raid on a Little Mountain home on February 9.

Caloundra Magistrates Court heard 127g of weed was found in a green tote bag along with prescription medications including oxycodone, Viagra, diazepam and buprenorphine.

Police prosecutor Stu Lydford said several clip seal bags along with a glass pipe and digital scales were also found.

On February 16, Johnstone came to police and confessed the drugs belonged to hers saying she had left the bag at her mate’s house before the property was raided.

The court heard she had no prescriptions for the “concoction” of medications and drugs found.

Duty lawyer Donna Hanslow-Hastie said Johnstone told the court the jeweller had been seeking help for an opiate addiction that had taken a hold of her life for some time.

Johnstone pleaded guilty to possessing drugs, s4 medicines and utensils and was sentenced to six months probation.

Convictions were recorded.
