A victim of an unprovoked attack had no chance to defend himself when a Coast man threw a flurry of punches and threatened to stab him with a smashed beer bottle.

Nicolas James Thorne had been drinking when he attacked his girlfriend's ex-partner in Nambour on January 10.

Police prosecutor Brendan Newman said Thorne punched the man in his face six to eight times and fractured his nose in two places during the unprovoked attack.

"The victim was trapped within his vehicle, in what could be described as a submissive position with … (Thorne) having the advantage from attacking from a higher, more controlled position," he said.

Sergeant Newman said the 40-year-old took the victim's keys from his car and threatened to stab him with a smashed beer bottle.

He said a prison sentence of 12 to 15 months with a parole release date after a third would be appropriate for the violent outburst.

The court heard the victim, who has two children with Thorne's girlfriend, still suffered from pain and couldn't work for three days after the incident.

In a victim impact statement, he said he suffered "sleepless nights" and ongoing fear of running into Thorne.

Sergeant Newman suggested Thorne pay $1200 in compensation to the victim.

Thorne pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday to 20 charges including one count of assault occasioning bodily harm in a public place while adversely affected - a domestic violence offence.

Solicitor Laura Turner said Thorne confronted the father regarding issues surrounding the drop off of the two children.

"He went to talk to him about it, when he got to the vehicle he could smell liquor on the breath of the victim and this has caused him to become infuriated because he had … been driving with the children in the vehicle," she said.

Ms Turner said a medical record before the court supported Thorne's claims and stated the victim was drinking beer on the day.

She said Thorne had a limited history, but an alcohol problem had influenced his recent offending.

"He has been consuming six to ten beers a day for a fair period," she said.

"Since being in custody he has in some way benefited, he is now not drinking or smoking which he has been doing since he was 14."

She said her client was seeking medical support to get back on the right track and was now medicated for anxiety and depression.

Mr Turner asked for Thorne to be immediately released on parole.

She said he could also be placed on a suspended sentence.

Magistrate Graham Hillan said the victim didn't have "any chance" of defending himself from the serious attack.

"He was in a position where he could not defend himself," he said.

Thorne was sentenced to 15 months in prison for the assault and was given a parole release date of June 9.

115 days of pre-sentence custody was declared as time already served.

Thorne was ordered to complete 60 hours of community service and pay the victim $1200 in compensation.

Convictions were recorded.
