Police had been looking for a sedan after the car was allegedly involved in "an incident" only hours before it collided with a truck, a chief officer has alleged.
Nambour Road Policing Unit officer-in-charge Shane Panoho said he was frustrated about crashes he says could have been avoided.
"If I look frustrated it's because I am, these things could be avoided," Senior Sergeant Panoho said.
"We need families to step up and speak to their loved ones.
"Stop them from making bad decisions, and then compounding that and driving on our road, putting themselves and everyone else at risk."
Sen Sgt Panoho spoke to media following the serious crash on Blackall Range Rd, Woombye about 10am on Thursday.
Sen Sgt Panoho said initial investigations suggested a white Ford sedan had crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a truck.
The driver of the sedan, a woman aged in her 30s, was flown to hospital with "extremely serious" injuries to her head, chest and leg.
The truck driver, aged in his 50s, was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for treatment to a leg injury.
Sen Sgt Panoho alleged police had tried to locate the Ford before the crash, after it was reportedly involved in an "incident" in Kawana earlier on Thursday.
He alleged concerned members of the public had reported the "driving actions" of the person behind the wheel to police.
Investigations into the earlier incident are continuing.
"It was a vehicle of interest prior to the crash and again we are urging any members of the public who might be holding dashcam footage of their observations of the driving of this particular vehicle to come forward, please provide that to us," Sen Sgt Panoho alleged.
"Our Forensic Crash Unit is very interested in speaking to you as to what your observations were."
Sen Sgt Panoho alleged the car driver's behaviour had been dangerous, and they had put themselves and others on the road at risk.
He said another family had been "adversely affected as a result".
