A rare $16m new marina development has opened up on the southern Sunshine Coast as the area navigates a population explosion.

The new Pelican Waters Marina officially opened on Friday, June 16, marking the completion of a massive new facility capable of holding almost 300 vessels.

Pelican Waters general manager of development Hamish Pressland said the facility was expected to cater to a range of people including retirees, young professionals and families who may not have expected to be able to own their own boat.

Eight years in the making, the new marina was expected to offer a full range of marine services for owners as well as fuel facilities, meaning no more trips to Kawana or Mooloolaba to fill up.

Mr Pressland said it was the first new marina — complete with its own $750,000 forklift — built on the Sunshine Coast in 40 years and said it boasted the only fully enclosed stacker in the region.

The 3000sq m fully enclosed shed can store 160 boats up to 10m long, and one-hour launch and retrieval, unlimited boat lifts, washdown and engine flushes were all part of the service on offer.

Wet berths provide safe harbour for up to 126 boats up to 17m long.

A joint venture between developer Pelican Waters Heart and Les Binkin’s Marine Holdings Australia, construction began in 2021.

Mr Pressland said the recent changes to the Caloundra bar and Bribie Island breakthrough had been topical, and they now provided more direct access for the marina, while novices could use the protection of the inside channel to Bribie Island.

He said a 54ft Riviera luxury boat currently at the marina had been able to navigate the bar and under the bridge, giving an indication of the scale of craft that could be expected at the new facility.

Local pontoon experts The Jetty Specialists played a key role in the construction of the ‘wet’ aspect of the new marina.

The Caloundra Coast Guard was also set to the call the new facility home, while a new indoor and outdoor dining venue was soon to be announced for the marina.
