Pavilion Mooloolaba rooftop bar and dining approved by Sunshine Coast Council

A popular Mooloolaba venue has gained approval for a rooftop bar and restaurant expansion giving it the potential to double in size and host private functions and events.

A rooftop bar and dining area at a popular Mooloolaba venue is tipped to be open by the end of the year after plans were approved by Sunshine Coast Council.

The development application to build a 364 sq m rooftop bar and dining area at the Pavilion Mooloolaba was approved on March 27 after co-owners Shane Hepburn and Craig Morrison lodged an application in November 2022.

The duo opened the Mediterranean style Mooloolaba Esplanade business in September 2021.

Mr Morrison said the $2m project would be built above the popular venue and give better views of Mooloolaba Beach while also catering to bigger functions and events such as weddings.

It will double the venue’s capacity from 150 to 300 people.

Application documents for the rooftop area show a feature spiral staircase to the new level with beach booths, high benches, and a private booth.

“We believe in Mooloolaba ourselves, so we want to heavily invest in Mooloolaba and have that first waterfront or beach-facing rooftop,” Mr Morrison said.

The application went through council “as smooth as possible”, he said, with the only concern being potential noise pollution for nearby residents.

But Mr Morrison said the new rooftop venue would not generate any more noise than other businesses on the Esplanade.

“We’re dealing with (potential noise) with acoustic treatment ... but also lots of landscaping. It’s going to be really green,” he said.

He said he and Mr Hepburn saw potential in Mooloolaba and wanted to encourage as much growth on the esplanade as possible.

“The more people that start giving a really good offering on the front is going to better for everyone including the tourists and the locals,” he said.

Work will begin on the development as early as July with hopes it will be open by the end of the year for the Christmas rush.

The Pavilion restaurant will continue trading as normal throughout the works.
