Group 1-winning trainer Paula Barron has returned to the South East Queensland form guide and is back in the winners’ circle after taking over the head training duties for A List Stud.

Previously headed by Allan Chau on the Gold Coast, Barron was working part time for A List while also training a handful of her own horses.

The 58-year-old took over on September 1 and now looked after 38 current runners.

“I was basically just training as a hobby but once Allan decided to go out on his own they asked me and so when these opportunities come along you take them and run with it,” she said.

“There’s a lot of really nice horses and I’ve only ever had a handful of horses so I can now see what it’s like to train at a larger scale.

“I’ve always been keen to do something like this over the years so even though I would like to be about 20 years younger, my husband helps me out a lot and we seem to be going alright.”

Barron has recorded 10 wins and 19 placings from her 84 starts this season.

The laid back character, who took out the 1991 Goodwood Handicap with Crush, said she hoped to have a solid season and wasn’t looking too far down the track.

“I had been involved for around two years beforehand and A List has been on the Gold Coast for around three years now,” she said.

“If we can have a successful season and see what comes of it I’ll be happy.

“I think my career is starting to wind down but I’m hoping to see it out as long as A List is thriving and happy to have me around.”

Following a good hat-trick win from Outweighed on Mooloolaba Cup Day, Barron said she was eager for more positive results in the coming weeks.

“Outweighed at the moment would be our best horse in the stable, she’s won her first three races and handled metropolitan grade last start so she’s just taking it step by step at the moment,” she said.

“We’ve got some other nice horses in Noble Style, Deep Fire and Old Song who are competitive and are coming through the grades.”
