A fiercely competitive Sunshine Coast boxing talent is continuing to impress after being crowned the best female fighter at the recent National Titles, gaining selection for the Australian youth boxing team.

Noosa District State High School student Paige Robinson took out the female 60kg division at the National Titles in Melbourne on July 8.

Judges and selectors were overly impressed with her performances selecting her as the only female in the eight-person squad to represent Australia at the Youth World Championships in Spain in November.

The grade 12 student said the past few weeks had been very exciting.

“I had fought my opponent twice before but to win at that level was very special,” Robinson said.

“To be awarded the best female fighter of the tournament was another really cool achievement and then I was beaming when I found out I was selected in the Australian team.”

Robinson, 17, has been fighting since she was 10-years-old at Impact Boxing and Fitness Centre in Cooroy.

She said she was eager to improve further in the coming weeks.

“Golden Gloves is my next event in two weeks and then I’ve got a training camp in Thailand in September,” she said.

“Something I really enjoy about boxing is the fact that you’re never the best, you can always be better and always improve,”

Robinson’s achievements come after Kawana Waters State College Student Tiana Rew took out the under-15 Australian title.

Impact Boxing head coach Mark Evans said he was incredibly proud of Robinson.

“When she walked into the gym we really started from scratch but she trusted the process, put in a lot of hard work, stayed loyal to the sport and is now ticking some boxes which is huge,” he said.

“She moves quite well, switches from orthodox to southpaw without even thinking about it, is quite evasive and has really good head movement, makes them miss and makes them pay straight away as she is a really good counter puncher.

“Next year she becomes an elite fighter and the competition will go up for her again but she wants to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games, at the Olympics and eventually turn professional.”
