Olympic bid 2032: Sunshine Coast development firms hail Brisbane bid progress

Two major Sunshine Coast development firms have hailed major progress on a 2032 Olympic bid and the possibility of an investment boom.

Brisbane to secure the 2032 Olympic Games

Two of the region’s largest development firms have hailed progress on a bid to bring the “biggest show on earth” to the Sunshine Coast.

Representatives of Stockland and Walker Corporation weighed in after news broke the 2032 Brisbane Olympic bid would proceed to a final vote with a result possible within weeks.

Mayor Mark Jamieson hailed the progress on Friday, as International Olympic Committee documents unveiled a blueprint for the region which included several venues and events.

A Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre was shown at the Kawana Sports Precinct in a fly-through video, while Mr Jamieson said future investigations would continue into a possible Maroochydore CBD location, which could be a convention and exhibition centre also able to host the basketball preliminaries.

Walker Corporation’s Maroochydore CBD project director Murray McCarthy said a successful Olympic bid would provide the potential to secure new investment in infrastructure, which would respond to the region’s needs and make the Maroochydore CBD a “truly connected city”.

“And if the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games proposal is successful, Walker Corporation will continue to work with council and other delivery partners on the exact location and configuration of the village and supporting infrastructure, ensuring it is consistent with the Maroochydore City Centre vision,” Mr McCarthy said.

“The Maroochydore City Centre has the capacity to deliver a range of Olympics-related activities, including the required accommodation to house around 1370 athletes and officials, in one location on the Sunshine Coast.

“We are all keeping level-headed as we count down to the July IOC (International Olympic Committee) vote, but there is no doubt a successful Olympics bid will provide the chance to unlock once in a generation investment opportunity for Maroochydore.

“Regardless of the Olympics bid there is no doubt heavy-rail will be a game-changer and one of the crucial elements, key to making Maroochydore a truly connected CBD.”

Stockland’s Queensland general manager of communities David Laner said the firm was fully behind the efforts.

“We strongly support the Government’s bid for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics,” Mr Laner said.

“The Sunshine Coast has a huge capacity to play an important role in delivering a world-class event, which will bring significant economic opportunities to the region.

“We also see it playing a role in delivering key enabling road, sporting, recreation, and transport infrastructure to both support the region’s growth and deliver a successful Games experience.”
