Holiday-makers flocking to Noosa this silly season are being urged to ditch the car as the council reveals plans to close down a beachfront car park in favour of creating a more people-friendly space.
The Main Beach carpark at Noosa will be trialled this festive season as a Pop-up People’s Park for two weeks over the Christmas break, with picnic tables and live music.
The Noosa Council said the park would be temporarily named Main Beach People’s Park during the trial from December 23 to January 7.
Acting Infrastructure Services director Shaun Walsh said the partial closure of the car park would enable visitors to use the space to relax and socialise.
“We are returning the car park back to the people,” Mr Walsh said.
“There will be a drop off and pick up drive through lane along with disability bays available, but the remainder of the car park will be transformed into a setting of picnic tables, chairs, marquees and live music.
“We are looking to create a place where people can socialise, relax, enjoy a picnic while visiting the beach.”
Mayor Clare Stewart said the closure of the car park, as well as the free public transport options, will help make the Noosa main beach more accessible for families over the holidays.
“Our free holiday buses are also back from this weekend,” Ms Stewart said.
“You can also take advantage of the electric shuttle that runs every 15 minutes from 7am until 7pm and half-hourly until 10pm, linking Noosa Heads, Noosa Junction, Weyba Road and Noosa Parade.
“Park your car for free at the Weyba Road AFL ground, The J or anywhere along the route and catch the 065 Loop Bus from there.”
From December 9 to January 21, five free bus services will operate.
