Daniel and Hannah Ashman were in bed at their Maroochydore home on Monday night, October 7, when they were woken by a fire alarm.

Mr Ashman said he went downstairs to turn the alarm off when he was confronted with raging flames in the kitchen.

“I started yelling that there was a fire and went back upstairs,” he said.

“Hannah handed me Jake (three years old) and I thought she was right behind me.

“I ran outside but I couldn’t find her. I handed my boy to our neighbour and ran back into the house to look for her.

“The house was falling apart around me and falling down beside me but I couldn’t see her.”

The heroic husband suffered burns to 20 per cent of his body in his effort to find his wife and baby boy.

When Mr Ashman made his way out of the horror house fire he found his wife.

“She’d gone out the back door and the back fence to the park,” he said.

“She started shouting at us and when I saw her alive with Bodie I was so relieved.

“Sadly we lost our little dog Chopsticks though.”

Emergency services were called to the house fire at Tepequar Drive at 10pm, that Monday night.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said the house was “well involved” upon arrival and that crews had the fire fully out by 11pm.

Ambulance crews rushed Mr Ashman, with burns to his back and arms in a potentially-life threatening condition, to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Mrs Ashman suffered burns to her feet and smoke inhalation and was taken in a stable condition to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Both the boys were also taken in a stable condition with smoke inhalation to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Mr Ashman said the fire most likely started through an electrical fault of a powerboard in the house.

He said they had insurance but it didn’t cover everything.

“We were couchsurfing for the first four nights but then insurance kicked in and they’ve put us up somewhere,” he said.

“But we’ve lost everything and the home we owned.

“We’re looking for a rental now but that’s been hard. I’ve lived here my whole life and there aren’t many rentals available.”

Mr Ashman’s sister, Vicki Rasmussen, started a GoFundMe campaign to support them.

“My brother and family lost their home in a terrible fire,” she said.

“They have lost everything.

“My brother has burns to 20 per cent of his body and Hannah has badly burnt feet … they’re struggling to look after their 12-week baby and three-year-toddler is in terrible pain.

“Dan and Hannah escaped with the baby and toddler in their arms.

“They have lost everything they own and nowhere to live.

“They are desperate for help right now.”

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said the investigation was still ongoing.
