A 21-year-old fit and healthy Queensland woman is in a state of shock and disbelief after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer despite having no symptoms and not feeling unwell at all.

Mia Preston, 21, originally from Maleny, moved interstate with her boyfriend this year to study communications and design at university.

What she thought was a routine blood test and check up at her doctors has changed her life.

She said she had felt perfectly fit, healthy and normal and was not ill in the lead-up to the test.

When her doctor first saw the blood test results, she thought it was a mistake.

When she saw them for the second time she sent them to a specialist for a second opinion.

But no amount of retesting or re-examining the results could change the facts.

Miss Preston was battling leukaemia. She was diagnosed on April 25.

Doctors still are not sure of the stage of the disease but are rushing to start treatment to save her life.

Tanae Barnes, Miss Preston’s cousin and close friend from Maleny, said they wanted her to start chemotherapy right away.

“They were worried chemo will damage her fertility so are putting it off so she can do a round of IVF first,” Miss Barnes said.

“But it wasn’t taking. She wasn’t reacting well to it and now she’s also been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).

“She wanted to freeze her eggs but now it might not be an option. She has to start chemo next week.

“It’s just one thing after another and it’s hanging over her head.”

Miss Barnes said their family was close knit and had strong ties to the Sunshine Coast.

The girls went to primary school in Maleny, then Miss Preston graduated from Coolum State High School in 2020.

Her mother lives and works in Caloundra and her grandparents own and operate Saintsational Sausages at Maleny.

“The family is devastated and she’s been deemed unsafe to travel back home,” Miss Barnes said.

“The cancer is very aggressive and she’s going to need a lot of chemo and treatment. First up is a 33-day treatment plan where she’ll be in hospital having treatment every day.

“Then it will change to a monthly plan.”

To support her beloved cousin Miss Barnes launched a GoFundMe campaign.

“She still has rent to pay and she can’t work or study,” she said.

“Because she doesn’t have any symptoms she’s in shock and doesn’t believe she’s sick yet. She’s the youngest person on her ward and while she’s putting on a positive front she’s struggling and the family is emotional.

“But she’s ready to smash it and just wants to get it over and done with so she can move on with her life.

“It’s scary because it’s so uncommon. Usually it’s little kids or older people who get this type of cancer.”

Known for her quick wit and dazzling smile, Miss Preston said she was determined to beat her cancer diagnosis.

“She’s the life of the party and has always been playful and kind,” her cousin said.

“She’s a big family girl and is always there for us and her friends.

“She’s such a trooper and thankfully has a lot of support around her.

“If anyone can get through this she can.”
