Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre to open as mass vaccination hub

Sunshine Coast residents yet to be fully vaccinated are being invited to get their first or second jab at their local school this weekend.

Six state Coast schools will be joining 116 schools across Queensland being turned into mass vaccination hubs as part of a statewide vaccination blitz on Saturday, October 23.

Noosa District State High School principal Brett Burgess said he was encouraging anyone who is still waiting to get their vaccination to head to one of the local schools.

Mr Burgess said the Cooroy campus library would be transformed for Saturday into a vaccination hub in a bid to make it easier for people to get vaccinated.

“Anything we can do to make it easier to get easier access to the vaccine is a good thing,” he said.

“We're bringing the vaccine hubs into the community but it’s up to people to really make the use of the hubs.

“You’re not going to get a better opportunity than this as people are very familiar with their schools.”

Mr Burgess said the recent community case detected on the Gold Coast on Thursday was a warning to Sunshine Coast residents that Covid-19 is still a real threat to the community.

“Most people are looking forward to having holidays without the scare of having to be in quarantine and take further leave,” he said.

“The scare on the Gold Coast will bring some additional people out (this weekend to get vaccinated).

“Safety is always a big thing for our school and anything we can do to keep our community safe is a good thing.”

  • Beerwah State High School
  • Coolum State High School
  • Noosa District State High School
  • Nambour State College
  • Sunshine Beach State High School
  • Maroochydore State High School

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the school pop-up clinics would be available across multiple regions this Saturday from 9am to 2pm.

“Super Saturday is our largest vaccine push to date. If you’ve been saying you’ll just wait a bit before getting the vaccine – it’s time for you to come forward and get vaccinated now,” she said.

“We need Queenslanders to vaccinate before it’s too late.”

Anyone aged 12 and over who was yet to be vaccinated could go to any vaccination clinic this Saturday without an appointment.
