Maroochydore Swans player Michael Holden leads race for Sunshine Coast premier men’s golden boot

A “nothing to lose” mentality is driving a potent goalscoring campaign from Maroochydore’s Michael Holden as he enjoys one of his biggest seasons yet.

The Maroochydore Swans may be battling through a tough season but it certainly hasn’t hampered the attacking prowess of their striker who is regularly hitting his target.

Michael Holden has belted 17 goals in 14 games to lead the premier men’s goal scoring standings ahead of Gympie’s Jayden Davey, who has 16 and Noosa’s Cory Johnson, who has 11.

He leads the golden boot race but the Swans are battling in eighth on the 10-team ladder.

There are still four games remaining but it’s already Holden’s biggest season to date with the Swans

He nailed 11 and eight goals respectively in his previous two campaigns with the club.

“This is probably actually one of the biggest (goal tallies) I’ve ever had through my years of playing,” Holden said.

The 24-year-old joined the Swans from Tasmanian NPL team Devonport Strikers in 2019.

He said he had enjoyed his shift to the Coast and put his big year down to the Swans pulling out all the stops to try to turn their season around.

“We don’t have anything to lose so I’ve just more or less, especially in the second half of the season, been going for goals more often and where I can,” Holden said.

“It came to a stage where we had to basically throw everything forward and try and get results each game.

“The team hasn’t gone as well as we’d hoped this season but personally I’m pretty happy with the way I’ve gone and the way I’ve been in front of goals so can’t complain there.”

Holden’s highest goal tally came against Caloundra on June 26 when he kicked three into the net during a 7-1 triumph.

The left-footer has scored in 11 of his 14 games off both feet.

The Swans will take on Beerwah Glasshouse United at 6pm on Saturday.
