A young man said he is “happy to be alive” after sustaining serious burns when his ute burst into flames at Rainbow Beach.
Lochy Black was flown to hospital after the vehicle caught fire on a busy stretch of beach near Leisha Track just after 1pm on Saturday.
He was treated for burns to his arms and stomach.
Mr Black, who is in his 20s, took to Facebook after the incident to thank everyone who helped him.
“Hey everyone, unfortunately I was the bloke whose ute was up in flames today,” Mr Black wrote.
“Just wanna say a massive thank you to everyone of you absolute legends who were helping me on the beach.
“I really can’t thank you all enough.”
He said the fire was caused by a "stupid” mistake.
“For those wondering was cooking snags on tray, jerry can on it was like 1m away had puffed up heaps from the sun, fumes caught and then exploded,” he wrote.
“Such a stupid thing to do but just wasn’t thinking about it, mistakes happen I guess.”
Mr Black said he was doing well after the incident.
“Got off really lucky with most of the burns.
“Just happy to be alive.”
