Ledgers balanced

Three Ledgers finished on the winning side of the ledger in the fourth edition of the charity day which honours one of their family members.

Three Ledgers yesterday finished on the winning side of the ledger in the fourth edition of the charity day which honours one of their family members.

The Michael Ledger Day has become a high point of the Nambour Cricket Club’s season, turning the sadness surrounding the death of the young cricketer from bone cancer into one of enjoyable fellowship between past and current Cutters players.

Michael’s father Grant, a former club president and life member of Nambour, again played in the Legends line-up which continued its winning streak against the Presidents XI in their annual clash at the Nambour Showgrounds.

Grant scored 22 and then gained bragging rights over his son Allen when he claimed his wicket during the unsuccessful Presidents XI run chase.

“I have not been reminded of that too much – yet,” the elder Ledger said last night.

Grant’s brother Scott, a former Queensland Sheffield Shield representative, also had an outing for the Legends who scored 241 to win by 18 runs – their fourth straight victory.

The other victorious Ledger was Michael’s twin brother Steve who led the under-25 side to a 40-run victory against the over-25s to equal their series at two matches all.

Matt Sampson made 87 to be named the man-of-the-match in the youth versus age tussle, while Michael Schofield, a former Cutter now with Glasshouse, top-scored in the Legends game with 60.

“It’s become a great day for the club,” Grant Ledger said.

“Some of the older guys we only see once a year. Some of them played here 40 years ago.

“It’s just a fantastic day for us all to come together and play some cricket.

“Even though we have a great time, the games are pretty serious.

“That was a pretty close call for us today.”

Proceeds from the day will go to cancer research.
