A popular brewery in the Sunshine Coast hinterland has continued to operate despite looming threats from the local government to obtain certain permits or close down.
Terella Brewing Pty Ltd filed an application with the Planning and Environment Court last month, seeking to set aside the Sunshine Coast Council’s enforcement notice to shut down activities on the rural 27ha property at 196 Bunya Rd, North Arm.
According to the planning court documents, the council’s notice required the business to “cease all unapproved land uses”, including the markets, outdoor cinema and petting zoo by June 30.
However, an event advertised by the brewery on social media last week showed visitors would experience an animal zoo, twilight markets and live music at an event to be held in July.
The brewery has also advertised bonfire nights with woodfired pizza and food trucks.
The notice from the council also stated the brewery and food outlet would be required to shut down by July 31, as it was “unlikely” the brewery could obtain a permit before that date.
As of Monday afternoon, July 14, a petition started by a member of the community to the council to “save” the brewery had amassed 2500 signatures.
“We ask council and local leadership to see what’s really at stake—not just a venue, but a way of life,” the petition stated.
“Let’s support a business that supports us, our families, and the spirit of North Arm and Yandina.
“We, the undersigned, represent a much larger, unified voice calling for common sense, fairness, and community support.”
One supporter of the petition stated the council should encourage more venues like Terella Brewing.
“As a former Sunny Coast resident who has moved a couple hours south - Terella is one of the reasons we pop back up to spend some dollars on the coast. With ample parking and respectful owners - the place is a gem,” they said.
Terella Brewing and the Sunshine Coast Council have both been contacted for comment by this publication.
