Kawana Waters: Masked robbers target homes, steal $3000 e-bike
Masked intruders have left Sunshine Coast residents living in fear after a series of brazen night-time break-ins targeting homes in the Kawana Waters area.
A husband and wife have revealed their $3000 e-bike was stolen during a robbery in the Kawana Waters area last week.
The husband and wife, who wished to remain anonymous, said they had just purchased their brand new e-bike days before.
This robbery is the latest in a string of incidents in the area.
About 2am on October 29, masked thieves broke into two other Kawana Waters homes, with one family having their car stolen along with their children’s birthday money.
“We actually only picked up the e-bike, like, we both got new e-bikes,” the wife said.
“I picked mine up on Sunday and he only rode it back on Monday afternoon, so it’s not like he rode it anywhere.
“We kept it in the garage behind a screen, so we were aware it would be tempting.
“So we put it behind a screen so it wasn’t visible.”
The wife said she did hear a sound in the early hours of October 29 while she was still asleep.
“I have to admit I did hear something like I heard a crash, but when you’re kind of like half asleep, you’re not sure,” the wife said.
“So I was listening out for other noises I didn’t hear anything.”
The wife did not notice there had been a break-in, until she woke up the next day.
“The garage door was open and obviously saw that the bike was gone and the screen had been knocked over as well,” the wife said.
“So that’s when we realised what happened.”
The husband also found a pen knife next to their driveway the next day.
“It may not be related, but my husband found a pen knife next to our driveway,” the wife said.
The wife said they did not to steal her e-bike, even though it was “right next” to her husband’s e-bike.
“I think that my theory is that they got scared when the screen crashed into my car, but they did rifle through my car.”
She also said the e-bike has not been found.
“I’m sure [the police] would contact us if they found the e-bike, and we’ve been looking on Gumtree and Facebook and I haven’t seen anything,” the wife said.
“So I’m not sure, like, maybe it’s just too good and they kept it for themselves.”
The wife said “they were really looking forward to using the e-bikes”.
“My husband’s retired and I thought that was a really nice thing for the two of us to do together,” the wife said.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed the burglary.
“Police are investigating reports of a break and enter in [Kawana Waters] on October 29,” the spokeswoman said.
“Initial investigations indicate, between 1.15 and 1.30am, an unknown person(s) broke into a [car] parked on [a Kawana Waters street] and stole a remote control.
“The remote control was used to open a garage door and steal an e-bike from inside.”
The woman said she felt more paranoid following the intrusion.
“Obviously, the next day we were checking multiple times, going around, checking all the locks,” the wife said.
“Like we’re being religious about that every night.”
Another resident in the area said “this behaviour cannot be accepted or tolerated”.
“Nobody should be made to feel unsafe and threatened by a group of people trying to enter their homes,” she said.
“It is extremely upsetting and disturbing and we should not feel like we need to live like prisoners in our own home.
“With so many people moving to the Sunshine Coast for a better, safer life this kind of behaviour needs to be dealt with.”
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said an investigation continued.
The spokeswoman said no charges had been laid.
