A camping trip at Rainbow Beach took a bad turn for a teenage girl and her friends when police caught the 18-year-old doing burnouts and fishtails at Double Island Point.

Three of her female friends were riding in the back of Jasmine Paige Howsan’s black ute when she was seen driving dangerously on October 17, 2021 at 10am.

The Dicky Beach teenager pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle in Caloundra Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Amanda Brewer said Howsan was seen by multiple beachgoers performing burnouts before being stopped by Tin Can Bay police who were patrolling.

“The car was visibly sliding in the soft sand ... police observed three young women getting out of the tray,” Sergeant Brewer said.

Police saw wheel spin marks and fishtails in the sand as well as families playing along the waterline.

Duty lawyer Neale Tobin told the court Howsan worked as a sales assistant at a bottle shop but would likely lose her employment as a result of the charge.

He said there were no alcohol or drugs involved in the incident and she had done a defensive driving course.

Magistrate Catherine Benson said her behaviour could be described as “stupid” and “immature”.

“It was also incredibly dangerous to be driving that way on a public beach with other families around ... you are very lucky that nobody was seriously hurt,” Ms Benson said.

Howsan was given six months’ probation and disqualified from driving for six months.

No conviction was recorded.
