Financial institution arrest on Sunshine Coast

A young man has been arrested and will face court after police tracked him to a Sunshine Coast bank where he was allegedly armed with a knife and driving a stolen car.

Jacob Theo Knottenbeld, 23, of Burnside, has been charged with seven offences after police recognised and followed a stolen vehicle to a Caloundra bank.

Police became aware of a stolen blue Ford Territory travelling through the Sunshine Coast on June 27.

The Sunshine Coast Tactical Crime Squad tracked the allegedly stolen car to a bank on Bowman Rd in Caloundra and followed him inside.

Police will allege Mr Knottenbeld pulled his hoodie over his head as he entered the bank and during a brief interaction with an employee of the business, police arrested him.

Police allegedly found he was carrying a small pocket knife inside of his hoodie, which led to the search of the allegedly stolen car, where police allegedly found a larger knife and a small amount of cannabis.

The car was allegedly stolen from an Alamein St, Beenleigh address on June 27.

Jacob Theo Knottenbeld was charged with one count each of possessing dangerous drugs, possession of a knife in a public place, failure to appear in accordance with undertaking, obstruct police officer, contravene direction or requirement Police Officer, driving of motor vehicle without a driver’s licence and unlawful use of motor vehicle.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Maroochydore Magistrates Court on July 18.

Sunshine Coast District Officer Superintendent Craig Hawkins said this arrest is an example of the proactive work of Sunshine Coast police.

“I am very glad we took the actions we did before something more sinister happened,” Superintendent Hawkins said.

“The community can be assured that we’re taking a proactive approach to crime and are working to disrupt offending before it happens.

“Information from the community, internal intelligence and proactive policing methodology allows us to interfere early.”
