A convicted paedophile has returned to a Sunshine Coast court after he allegedly failed to fulfil his reporting obligations and allegedly refused to give his name to police.

Jackson Tyler Coyle, 25, appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates Court via videolink from the Maroochydore Watch House on January 5, 2023, where he applied for bail.

The Buderim man faces one charge of failing to comply with his reporting conditions and one charge of obstructing police, which came from an earlier appearance in December 2022.

He did not enter a plea to these charges on January 5.

The court was told Mr Coyle had a legal requirement to report to police once every three months after he was placed on a suspended sentence in 2019 for luring two young boys and offering them $5 each for sexual favours.

At the time, he pleaded guilty to possessing child exploitation material and to two counts of grooming children under 12 with intent to procure them for a sexual act.

This suspended sentence was later extended by 12 months, the court was told.

The obstruct police charge stemmed from Mr Coyle refusing to tell police his name.

Police prosecutor Nick Nitschke said Mr Coyle had “failed miserably” to report to police.

Duty lawyer Leisel Rogan said if Magistrate Raelene Ellis ordered Mr Coyle to report more regularly, he would be more likely to comply.

“His present circumstances of being homeless and with his mental health may have led to the fact that he didn’t report on that quarterly basis,” she said.

“If he’s got a regular reporting requirement, then that’s something that’s going to be in the forefront of his mind. That’s something that’s easier to remember in terms of an obligation.”

Mr Coyle had spent three days in the Maroochydore Watch House, she said.

Ms Ellis was unsure if Mr Coyle would report to police as required.

There were also concerns he would fail to appear in court.

“Mr Coyle, if I let you out, are you going to appear (in court)?” Ms Ellis asked.

“Um, yeah,” he replied.

Despite stating she was not filled with confidence by Mr Coyle’s response, Ms Ellis granted Mr Coyle bail with the condition he report to Maroochydore police once a day.

He will return to Maroochydore Magistrates Court on January 9.
