Detectives are appealing for video footage from witnesses to a bloody attack on a 15-year-old Victorian tourist at Noosa Main Beach on New Year’s Eve.

Police arrested and charged two teenagers, a 17-year-old Highgate Hill boy and a 16-year-old Camira boy, with grievous bodily harm, after it was alleged they approached the boy near the Noosa Surf Club and slashed his face with a broken glass bottle at 10.40pm.

Maroochydore Child Protection Unit Detective Inspector Philip Hurst described the attack as “callous” and “prolonged”, but police believe it was unprovoked.

He said CCTV footage showed a crowd gathering during the attack and people were seen “jeering” and filming it.

“We have some of that footage, but we do believe there may be more footage out there that people may have that may be really relevant of either before or after this incident,” he said.

Detective Inspector Hurst said the boy also suffered a fractured jaw.

“He was kicked in the head while he was on the ground, where he couldn’t defend himself,” he said.

Police alleged the 16 and 17-year-old boys fled the scene shortly after the assault was over, and the injured boy was taken to hospital in a stable condition with significant facial injuries.

Detective Inspector Hurst said the 15-year-old had been holidaying in the Noosa region with a friends’ family at the time of the assault, and underwent facial reconstructive surgery.

The surgery was a success, Detective Inspector Hurst said, however the boy was left with a facial “disfigurement”.

He has since returned to Victoria with his family.

The two teens were arrested shortly after the alleged assault at a nearby boardwalk.

The 17-year-old was denied police bail and will appear in the Maroochydore Children’s Court, while the 16-year-old was scheduled to appear on a later date.
