A Golden Beach resident is calling for changes to what she is calling a “speedway” stretch of road before someone is killed.
Amanda Manton bought a home in Golden Beach about three months ago.
“We have a lovely community of new and old,” she said.
“We’ve got this massive migration ... I call it ‘digging for gold’,” she said.
The resident, who lives on Landsborough Pde, said she noticed vehicles increased their speed along a stretch of the road after the Golden Beach shops heading towards Pelican Waters.
She feared the stretch, in which the speed changes from 50kmh to 60kmh, would become the site of a fatal crash unless something was done to slow traffic.
“We want the community to work together with the police, the council and the local MP,” Ms Manton said.
“Everyone’s advocating for 50 and not 60 because everyone is trying to get across the road to the beach.
“Although it’s a main thoroughfare it needs to be a 50 zone.”
Ms Manton spoke out following a crash in Golden Beach, on a different part of Landsborough Pde, in which emergency services took nearly 30 minutes to cut a woman out of car.
“Do we have to wait for a dead child or dead elderly person before something is done,” she said.
“It’s like a speedway - it’s a straight run to the Pelican Waters bridge.”
The resident said many people, and not just “hoons”, travelled above 60kmh along the stretch.
More than 3200 traffic and related offences were recorded in the Sunshine Coast district from February to December 2022.
A police spokesman said all motorists should obey the speed limits and show “care and consideration” for other road users.
A Sunshine Coast Council spokeswoman said the safety of pedestrians and motorists was the council’s top priority.
“To ensure everyone commutes safely on this road, council’s traffic and transport team is investigating the traffic concerns raised at Golden Beach, including undertaking traffic counts to identify the issues,” she said.
“Queensland Police is the lead agency for enforcing speed limits and, in the interest of community safety, council encourages motorists to abide by the speed limits and take care when driving.
“There are multiple crossings along Park Pl, Landsborough Pde and Esplanade, Golden Beach, where the speed limit varies from 40kmh to 60kmh.”
