UPDATE: 4.45PM: COMMUNITY members who fall into Sunshine Coast Council's Division 5 will have to wait another day to find out their new representative.

Counting will resume tomorrow morning as the Electoral Commission of Queensland tallies up the final remaining seat for council.

Frontrunner Winston Johnston said he was happy to be in the lead, and expects an official result by lunchtime.

More their hat in the ring for Division 5 than any other on the Sunshine Coast with 10 hopefuls looking to replace retired Jenny McKay who left after 20 years on council.

A tired Mr Johnston spoke to the Sunshine Coast Daily this afternoon and said he was "happier" with his position than compared to a few days ago.

"I am ahead, so I am less worried than if I was behind," Mr Johnston said.

"I'm not overly confident but happy with my situation.

"I just wish it didn't take so long, I'm worn out."

Division 5 is the final seat to be declared after Division 2 candidate Brady Sullivan conceded to Terry Landsberg, Maria Suarez claimed Division 9 and David Law claimed Division 10.

EARLIER: WINSTON Johnston has put distance between himself and the chasing pack for the Sunshine Coast Division 5 seat in an election race that will go down to the wire.

At last official count, the Electorate Commission of Queensland had tallied up 92 per cent of the preferences and excluded five of the 10 candidates.

While the ECQ has Mr Johnston ahead by 573 votes, he estimated it to be 462.

"I am a lot happier today than compared to a couple of days ago. It was very nervous," Mr Johnston said.

"We should know by later this afternoon when the preferences are done.

"The process has been very tiring but it is hard when there is 10 candidates. But I am holding my own."
