A former Sunshine Coast resident and a doting father of two is fighting for life in a Thailand hospital after crashing a scooter.
Morayfield man Brenton Simmons was critically injured after crashing a 125cc scooter while holidaying in Thailand on Saturday, February 3.
The 29-year-old suffered a brain injury, seven broken ribs, a broken collar bone, and damaged eye socket as a result of the crash, which took place on Ko Lan Island, just off the coast of Pattaya.
After having surgery to release blood off the brain the father of two boys, a three-year-old and nine-year-old, is now fighting for life in a coma in hospital, with his mother Kerrie-Lee Simmons by his bedside.
Due to Mr Simmons not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash his travel insurance won’t cover the associated medical costs, leaving his family facing a mammoth bill of $280,000, including the cost to fly him home to Australia.
Holly Crang, who is the sister of Mr Simmon’s former partner and mother of his children Taylor Crang, said the wider family was devastated by what had happened.
“We just got told he’s had a really bad accident on the scooter,” she said.
“My nephew, which is Brenton’s son, turned around to his mother and asked ‘is my dad going to die?’
“We’re distraught, my sister is crying all the time, and it’s also been really hard on the kids.”
Ms Crang said it was important for the family to bring him home to Australia.
“We just don’t know how much care he is getting over there and his mum can’t stay over there the whole entire time,” she added.
“We want to know what kind of care is going on, we want to be able to see him here.
“We just really want to bring him back home to his two boys.”
A GoFundMe page has been created to bring Mr Simmons home, with the page attracting over $8500 in donations from more than 80 people, since being launched on Thursday.
