A father-of-two has tragically died in hospital after crashing a scooter in Thailand - with his family left devastated and heartbroken saying it was “a battle already lost”.

Former Sunshine Coast chef and doting father Brenton Simmons has been fighting for his life for more than two months after crashing a scooter in Thailand on February 3.

The 29-year-old, who now lives in Morayfield, suffered a brain injury, seven broken ribs, a broken collar bone, and damaged eye socket as a result of the crash, which took place on Ko Lan Island, just off the coast of Pattaya.

By March 26 the family had brought him home and moved him to a hospital in Brisbane.

On April 21 Mr Simmons succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital surrounded by family.

His mother Kerrie-Lee Simmons said she was heartbroken.

“Our hearts are broken,” she said.

“We moved mountains to get him home but the damage was too catastrophic for him to continue.

“We fought a battle that had already been lost.

“He is my hero, my warrior. Who fought against all odds until his last breath.

“He will be missed.

“Rest in peace my first born. My son.”

After the crash Mr Simmons was rushed into surgery in Thailand to release blood off his brain.

Mr Simmons was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and his travel insurance wouldn’t cover the associated medical costs – leaving his family facing a mammoth bill of $280,000, including the cost to fly him home to Australia.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help bring Mr Simmons home and raised more than $15k.
