Darren Ian Lockwood in Maroochydore court for Mudjimba fight with blade

A former correctional services officer says his decision to whip out a multitool and throw punches during a fight between teens is the “stupidest thing” he’s ever done.

A former correctional services worker and concerned dad armed himself with a multitool during an organised Sunshine Coast fight involving his children, a court has heard.

Darren Ian Lockwood, 51, was given 150 hours’ community service to be completed within one year in Maroochydore Magistrates Murri Court on September 15, 2022.

Police prosecutor Lee Allan said Lockwood had been involved in an organised fight at Mudjimba on January 9, 2022, where he was brandishing a multitool with the blade exposed using an “ice pick” grip.

The court heard the fight was mainly between teenagers and involved Lockwood’s child.

Lockwood’s partner Emma Jane Bonnell was sentenced in May for her involvement in the fight as she pleaded guilty to waving a baseball bat.

“My submission is the behaviour of (Lockwood) is worse given that there was a brandishing of the multi tool with the blade exposed,” Senior Constable Allan said.

“This caused the known victims and witnesses to be extremely shaken and stressed by the actions of the defendant.”

Lockwood also threw punches during the course of the fight, the court was told.

Defence solicitor Rod Morgan said his client was acting out of “great concern” for his child.

Mr Morgan said Lockwood told him it was “one of the stupidest things he’s ever done” and was highly embarrassed by the way he acted.

Lockwood worked as a correctional services officer and had no prior Queensland criminal history, the court heard.

Mr Morgan said the father suffered an injury at work which led to significant mental health issues that were debilitating for him.

“He has deep regret … it is unlikely he will do it again,” he said.

Lockwood pleaded guilty to affray and going armed so as to cause fear, which were the same charges his partner Bonnell was charged with.

No conviction was recorded.
