A Hervey Bay ice cream shop voted as the best in Australia has brought its 72 flavours to a new store in Noosa.
Planet 72 Ice Creamery opened at Gympie Terrace, Noosaville on Friday, August 11, with the freezers stocking the huge assortment of flavours they’re known for.
The family-run Hervey Bay shop was crowned Australia’s best ice creamery in Wotif.com’s Uniquely Aussie Awards in October last year.
Owner Dallas Harch said it was a good time to expand after 18 years in Hervey Bay, particularly after the buzz which followed the award.
Mr Harch said his Hervey Bay store received a 25 per cent increase in customer activity essentially overnight upon the announcement and has maintained the popularity.
He said the new shop in Noosaville, formerly Krung Thep Thai Restaurant, had already received a good following from locals and tourists.
Noosa’s bestseller so far was the burnt fig and honeycomb.
Other popular choices were the rum and raisin, rock salt caramel as well as rainbow and fairy floss for the children.
Some of the more exotic flavours include black sesame, chai tea, Snickers and peanut butter cookie dough.
Mr Harch bought Hervey Bay’s Great Australian Ice Creamery store in 2005 after running a Toowoomba restaurant and had initially expected the ice cream shop to be a “stepping stone”.
With a whopping 72 flavours – several rotating in and out – Mr Harch said he wanted to create a fun experience and something different.
The shop can also accommodate for allergies and other diet lifestyle choices.
Mr Harch’s wife Tanya is managing the Hervey Bay branch and his 24-year-old son Brock will soon be onsite manager at Noosa.
Mr Harch said he was proud of himself and his family and the staff for their hard work.
He hopes to open a third Queensland store within the next 12 months and branch out even further in the future.
He wants to bring the “same attitude and stability” to Noosa by remaining open seven days a week, rain or sunshine, Mr Harch said.
