Couple killed in crash with gravel truck

An elderly man and woman became the latest victims on the region's roads when their car was struck by a fully laden gravel truck and its trailer in the Mary Valley.

A blue tarp covered the bodies of a man and a woman who became the latest victims on the region’s roads yesterday.

Their belongings, including an unwrapped present, littered the crash scene.

The pair was killed when a fully laden gravel truck and its dog trailer smashed into their Nissan Pintara and pushed it more than 120 metres down the Mary Valley Highway.

The double fatality at the Amamoor turn-off, near Blackgate Road, brings to an end a horrific week on Gympie Region roads.

Six people have been killed in seven days.

Yesterday’s tragedy in the Mary Valley follows the horrific accident last Thursday, where four people where killed while travelling along the Bruce Highway near Coles Creek.

That quadruple fatality involved three trucks and a sedan.

Police on the scene of yesterday’s horrific accident said it appeared the Nissan sedan had pulled out of the Blackgate Road intersection into the path of the gravel truck.

The truck hit the driver’s side of the car.

The driver of the truck was taken to Gympie General Hospital with minor injuries and was later questioned by police

Gympie Fire and Rescue acting station officer Bill Edgar said there was nothing they could do to help the occupants of the Nissan when they arrived on the scene.

Mr Edgar said the force of the impact from the fully laden truck and trailer had pushed the driver’s side of the car to within 300mm of the passenger side of the vehicle.

Police and emergency service workers are urging drivers to take care while driving around the region’s roads to make sure they get safely home to their families.
