Construction on Nambour Police Station is powering ahead as town comes back to life

Another piece to Nambour’s revitalisation is finally coming to life as progress powers ahead on the town’s long awaited new police station.

Another piece to Nambour's revitalisation is finally coming to life as progress powers ahead on the town's long awaited new police station.

After first promised by the State Government in 2017, Coast company BBN Constructions was awarded the tender to build the $9 million facility late in 2020.

It's been a long time coming for Nambour, with police operating out of a temporary building since 2006 after policing needs outgrew the old 1960s era station.

Demolition of the old station started in November with the new facility starting to take shape.

Concrete has been laid and walls have been erected.

Sunshine Coast central patrol group inspector Jason Overland was pleased to see the Mitchell Street station starting to come to life.

"I think it's symbolic of the reinvestment in Nambour by the local business community and it's good for Nambour that the new police station is coming along at the same time as Nambour is rebranding itself," he said.

"It's great for the police who are working here at Nambour and also a fantastic resource for the community to have a new police station staffed with motivated police to look after them."

He believed, subject to weather, the station was progressing towards a September finish date.

BBN Constructions has plenty of history creating state-of-the-art police stations in the region having worked on the Maleny station's $2 million upgrade in 2017, and the $3.6 million Sippy Downs station in 2009.

It comes as plenty of time and effort is invested into bringing the town back to life with community group Reimagine Nambour pushing hard to rejuvenate the area.

More than $500,000 has been allocated to a CBD revitalisation project while just last week the new 'I am Nambour' brand identity was launched after being developed as part of the Nambour Economic Transition Strategy (NETS).

The Nambour Heritage Tramway Depot was also opened in May with plans for a new tram to hit the streets by the end of the year.

The modern, solar powered battery operated tram will be designed and built on the Sunshine Coast.

Until the battery-powered tram is built, the terminus will remain home to the 1968 Petrie Locomotive which was gifted to The Nambour Tramway Co by Bundaberg Sugar in 2014, for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The battery-powered tram will run between Nambour Mill Village Shopping Centre to the southern end of Quota Park between Repco and Aldi, and along Mill and Howard Streets.

The tram and terminus are expected to be operational by the end of the year.
