A teen design student has won the Sunshine Beach Surf Club’s first uniform design challenge.

Sunshine Beach State High School year 10 student Samantha Bourne was announced as the top entrant after presenting a standout concept for the club’s front-of-house uniform — a look inspired by the coast and designed around the club’s colour palette and practical needs.

The competition was developed in partnership with the school’s design and technology and fashion faculties, with students briefed earlier this year on what the club needed from a modern uniform.

Surf club president Warick Redwood said Miss Bourne’s work set a new benchmark for the program.

“Seeing their ideas recognised by a major community organisation has been incredibly motivating,” she said.

“It’s been an amazing partnership with outstanding impact.”

Miss Bourne will now collaborate with the club to turn her concept from a sketch into a finished product.

She also receives a $500 prize and the chance to build on her ambition of one day designing for Dior in Paris.

Head of Year 10 Tracy Marsden said the project was encouraging for students.

“Seeing their ideas recognised by a major community organisation has been incredibly motivating,” she said.

“It’s been an amazing partnership with outstanding impact,” she said.

General manager Julie Strudwick said the club’s support for the school includes traineeships, work experience placements and hosting the annual student fashion parade.
