Surfing legends speak up for charity

The surfers' long lunch that raises tens of thousands of dollars to help Coast's disadvantaged

MORE than 350 people will attend a Legends Long Lunch at Maroochydore RSL on Friday to both raise money to support some of the Sunshine Coast's most disadvantaged young people and to hear insights from three of Australia's most beloved surfing icons.

The Board Meeting surf charity event, now in its sixth year, raised $60,000 last year.

Guest speakers include surfing and shaping guru Wayne Lynch, surf cinematographer Jack McCoy and Dave Rastovich regarded by many as the living embodiment of surfing "soul”.

Also in the audience will be former world masters champion and multiple world professional tour runner-up Gary Elkerton, Dave 'The Mex' Sumpter and film makers Dick Hoole and Greg Huglin.

Guests will bid for surfing memorabilia that includes current world title ranking number one Julian Wilson's yellow leader's jersey, surfboards from Mitch Surman, Troy Smith, Lynch, Dick Van Stalen and Simon Anderson as well a a 10 foot SUP from GSI which has also provided a Hypto Krypto shortboard.

The Blue Bar Crew have also chipped in with a Cowley replica single fin shaped by Mic Folker.

10 Toes Brewery has kicked in a 50 litre keg and temprite hire for the auction while Sea Monkey Travel has listed a Double Island Point day surf trip for eight.

The Board Meeting provides equipment to make life easier for young people with disabilities and sources assistance where needed for their families.

Those attending are reminded proceedings will kick off at 11.45am for a noon start.
