Two additional cases of Covid-19 have been recorded on the Sunshine Coast overnight, while fragments have been detected at Kawana.

Concern Queensland graduation cluster will grow

Two new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded on the Sunshine Coast overnight while fragments have been detected in wastewater.

A Queensland Health spokeswoman confirmed there were two fresh cases overnight on Tuesday, part of 86 new cases statewide.

Queensland Health’s website has 22 active cases listed for the Sunshine Coast, down from 24 on Monday.

It takes the total number of Sunshine Coast cases to 155, with 132 of those having recovered.

Covid-19 fragments were also found in wastewater during recent routine testing at the Kawana wastewater treatment plant, according to the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service.

Speaking at Tuesday’s Covid-19 press conference, Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said the new cases continued the “doubling trend” shown every 48 hours.

Dr Gerrard said the “fast spreading” Omicron variant was the dominant strain.

“We are trying to reduce the spread of the virus to reduce the strain on hospitals and allow time for people to get their booster shots,” Dr Gerrard said.

It comes after five places in Caloundra, including a supermarket and bottle shop, were on Monday added to Queensland Health’s list of exposure sites.

In relation to changes to quarantine requirements, Dr Gerrard said people who were unvaccinated would have to quarantine for 14 days.

“We are joining with the other states in the national standard of a seven-day quarantine period,” he said.

Dr Gerrard said authorities had not made a call on what the quarantine arrangements would be for international arrivals.
