Three cases of Covid-19 have been recorded on the Sunshine Coast taking the total number of active cases to 24 while new exposure sites have been identified.

Queensland Health say low risk contacts should get tested for the virus as soon as possible and monitor for symptoms.

It comes after Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said there were 59 new cases recorded overnight, including on the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Townsville and Brisbane.

Speaking at this morning’s Covid-19 press conference, Dr Gerrard said 49 of the new cases were locally acquired, with 16 linked to a known case and 33 cases under investigation.

Dr Gerrard said there were now 43 confirmed cases of Omicron in Queensland, including 13 yesterday.

“The trend is likely to continue as we head into January,” Dr Gerrard said.

“There is a plan, it focuses heavily on the use of masks in public environments. We ask you to go above and beyond what is mandated, vaccination is also part of the national plan to deal with the Omicron strain.

“It appears the vaccine is effective in preventing severe disease in Omicron.”

“This is a new world and a new phase of the pandemic we are entering,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
