An Argentinian-born lifesaver on holiday in Noosa and two professional surfers are being hailed as heroes after they rescued two nudists from nearly drowning at an isolated beach.

The quick thinking actions from brothers Kaiden and Landen Smales, 19 and 16, and Micaela Guacci, 31, saved two swimmers from drowning at unofficial nudist beach Alexandria Bay at 2.30pm on Wednesday, October 11.

Mr Smales said he and his little brother were surfing at the northern end of the Noosa National Park, when they were flagged down by Ms Guacci’s friend.

Ms Guacci, a trained lifeguard, spotted the struggling swimmers and sprinted into the water while her friend sought help.

The brothers, formerly ranked one and two in Queensland for under 18s mens longboard, rushed to the other end of the beach to paddle out and assist.

Mr Smales said they paddled about 100m offshore to reach the swimmers, with the younger brother paddling further out to the woman who was in the most distress.

He said the swimmers had been caught in “one of the most intense rips” he had seen at Alexandria Bay.

Ms Guacci said when she reached the pair, the woman, who was a weak swimmer, was struggling.

The 31-year-old said she stayed closest to the woman and called the other swimmer over to avoid getting separated.

“She told me ‘I can’t do it, I can’t do it’ and I told her ‘yes you can, help me please, swim together, move your legs, please, come on, we can do it, move your legs, come on, come on’,” Ms Guacci said.

Within minutes Ms Guacci spotted the Smales brothers paddling out to help.

A lifeguard on a jetski found the group and brought the swimmers to shore safely, who were assessed by paramedics.

Mr Smales said he got quite a shock when he realised the struggling swimmers were nudist.

Alexandria Bay has long been known as an unofficial nudist beach – even though public nudity is illegal in Queensland.

“It was probably one of the most unique rescues anyone would have come across,” Mr Smales said.

“They were both there swimming naked in the southern corner, because that’s where most of the swimmers go.”

Surf Lifesaving Queensland Regional Manager Aaron Purchase said lifeguards were called after an emergency beacon was activated.

He said strong rips were common at Alexandria Bay, which was an unpatrolled beach with very little phone reception, and it was a dangerous to go swimming there.

He encouraged swimmers to swim at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags and said “well done” to the Smales brothers and Ms Guacci.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said three swimmers were taken to Nambour Hospital from the beach, all in stable conditions.
