Surf lifesavers and veterans will form a guard of honour at Kawana Surf Club on Saturday in a significant show of respect for the late Kevin “Woody” Hurman.

Mr Hurman died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on July 26 after a lifetime dedicated to helping others.

He was 85.

The Vietnam War veteran and Order of Australia recipient is survived by wife Lola and children Geoff and Bambi.

He was described by his children as a “helpful, generous person and a wonderful man”.

The former Kawana RSL sub branch president, who was nicknamed Woody after a famous American musician, died one week shy of his 66th wedding anniversary.

Great mate Gary Penney will be one of the few veterans present on Saturday as Mr Hurman’s funeral will be limited to 20 people due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Mr Penney said it would be livestreamed at the surf club’s big screen in a limited ticketed event.

He said the service would start at midday.

“The funeral was originally delayed because of the lockdown and you could only have 10 people, but we couldn’t do that for a man like Woody,” Mr Penney said.

“It’s a shame but we think this is the best way.”

Mr Penney said the service would include poppies laid on the casket, followed by The Ode, The Last Post and The Rouse.

He will present Mrs Hurman with an Australian flag in recognition of the 24 years of service Mr Hurman gave his country through the Royal Australian Air Force.

Major Fred Shaw of the Salvation Army, who knew Mr Hurman well, will be the celebrant.

“When we finish at the chapel we will go back to the surf club and share stories about Woody,” Mr Penney said.

“At the entrance there will be a guard of honour from surf lifesavers and veterans in their jackets.

“I’ve never seen it done before. He was a giant of both.”
