The former boss of a longstanding Coast tourism hub says the decades of massive change have been a major positive for his area.
Les Woodbury retired from his role at Alex Beach Cabins and Tourist Park in September last year after 37 years in charge.
The business started out in 1972 as a small caravan park with a few mobile and onsite spots for visitors.
“I remember the Presbyterian church built it as a caravan park in the early 70s and there was hardly anything in that entire area at that time,” he said.
“The lake wasn’t out the front, there were very few surrounding buildings and the very popular water slide definitely wasn't there.
“The closest other building to us then was the bowling rink.”
When something needed fixing or improving Mr Woodbury said it was whoever and whenever they could get to it.
“Back then is was just us and the Pickle family that were running it and we used to just get things done between us whenever we could,” he said.
“It’s very different to now with the amount of staff they employ and everyone’s roles.”
Mr Woodbury, 70, said it has been amazing to see progression in the area.
“For us it went from a small ordinary caravan park to a horizontal hotel,” he said.
“The whole area including ours has gone from strength to strength which has been a massive positive.”
Mr Woodbury said he enjoyed his time in charge and held great memories.
“I would think it’s one of the premier businesses in the area and still is,” he said.
“The only reason I had to give it away was because of my age but the place has been and will always be full of good times and friendly smile.”
