A subdivision proposed for a Sunshine Coast suburb battling gridlock traffic twice a day has prompted an onslaught of opposition from locals.

The plans for the 42-block subdivision at 90 and 102 Burnside Rd, Perwillowen were first submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council in December 2022, with submissions to the public opening up in February 2024.

Burnside resident, Candace Slade said her and husband, Peter, were concerned the current road network serving the Burnside and Perwillowen areas would not cope with an additional 42 homes, each averaging a two-car household.

“We’ve only got one road out for the whole of Heritage Estate here, the problem is we have big trucks coming up and down and the road since we’ve been here has had a fair bit of maintenance done to it,” Ms Slade said.

“The more traffic we get on it, building the blocks there, the road just isn’t going to be able to handle it.”

Ms Slade said currently during peak school traffic times an additional hour was added on to travel time for residents looking to leave the estate.

“We know people are moving up here, we know houses are in demand but council has to be realistic about it,” Ms Slade said.

“It is not just Burnside Rd, it is Perwillowen Rd and how much that can take.

“If there was a fire or something we’d all be blocked, it’d be hell to get out of here.”

Since the proposal was put on public notice 15 submissions have been made in relation to the subdivision plans.

A number of concerns raised involve the current state of the Perwillowen and Burnside roads and consistent traffic woes.

Within the town planning report submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council the developer states Burnside Rd would need to be widened.

“The proposal includes a new, single intersection from Burnside Road to provide access. In accordance with the Engineering Report, widening of Burnside Road is required to provide a compliant verge,” the town planning report states.

Submissions on the development proposal are open until March 6, 2024.
