Sunshine Coast Asian restaurant Junk to open new venue in Sippy Downs

After closing down a venue during the pandemic, a popular restaurateur is having another crack at expanding his business. See the video of the exciting new restaurant.

A popular Sunshine Coast eatery is investing more than half a million dollars into opening a new venue after struggling to kick off a second store during the heat of Covid-19 two years ago.

Junk owner Scott Hoskins is sinking $600,000 into opening a new restaurant at Sippy Downs in February 2023, with plans revealing neon and street-style aesthetics.

Earlier this year, a new cafe and healthy takeaway also sprung up in the suburb.

Mr Hoskins said his upcoming, 130-seat venue came after he originally opened a second, 40-seat venue in Buddina in late 2020, but was forced to hang up a closed sign after struggling to land staff.

He has teamed up with “prolific” developer Devcon Building Co to open the Sippy Downs restaurant, which he said he was confident would be a success because of its location in the dense and rapidly-growing suburb.

“Sippy Downs will be one of the major city centres on the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

Mr Hoskins said his new venue will capture the same atmosphere as his first venue – at Ocean St, Maroochydore – but feature a stronger focus on a neon, art and a street-style aesthetic, a bar and lounge, and long tables to cater to groups and families in Sippy Downs.

Mr Hoskins said he was also confident he could recruit 30 staff needed for his new venue.

Devcon Building Co director Michael Kain said he was pleased to have landed Junk on a five-year lease as it had built a “fantastic” reputation since launching in 2014.

“Sippy Downs has been crying out for a similar Asian fusion eatery in their community,” he said.

The new venue will be part of the developer’s upcoming complex, HQ.

4556 Chamber of Commerce president Donna Niazov said new businesses were popping up in the area because they wanted to be a part of a booming suburb with new housing and developments.

She said Junk will be an instant favourite and was needed in the area, especially being close to a university.

“It’s restaurants like this that keep people in the area,” she said.

The 239 sqm restaurant will be located at the corner of Courage St and Sippy Downs Dr.
