An exclusive movie experience featuring alcohol and film festivals is coming to Caloundra as its local cinema gears up to reopen under new management.

The Strand Cinema Caloundra will open its doors on November 24 after extensive renovations to its five-screen theatre.

Owner Luke Warburton has spearheaded the iconic cinema’s revival after its closure earlier this year during the pandemic.

The independent business owner, who also runs the Bribie Cinemas, said a liquor licence and reclining seats would be some of the improvements being rolled out to improve the customer’s movie experience.

“The premium offering is what is bringing people back to the cinema,” he said.

“Those sites bringing menus and alcohol to customers have come back a lot quicker from the pandemic compared to those who haven’t.

“You can see it in the box office sales.”

Mr Warburton said this investment into customer experience would offset the impact streaming services had on the cinema industry.

“There’s lots of competition now, we have movies being released simultaneously on Netflix and at the cinemas” he said.

“However if you improve these going out experiences, people will pay for them.”

Some of the notable improvements for the Strand Cinema include new seats, carpets, sound systems, projectors and a fresh paint job.

Mr Warburton said the 500 capacity cinema would host morning tea events, ladies’ movie nights, and film festivals.

“We’ll definitely be changing it up here with the movie options available,” he said.

“We have several screens here so we’ll have the blockbusters and the family movies, but also some foreign films and the lesser known B-grade films.

“Some of the more niche films that haven’t been shown in the past will be brought to Caloundra to add to that experience.”

The Strand Cinema Caloundra is located at 11 Bulcock St, Caloundra, and will open on November 24.
