FIRST GLIMPSE: Towers on horizon in Spotlight’s CBD hub

Retail boss Zac Fried says greater detail on the next stage of a $250 million Maroochydore CBD investment will become available “shortly” as new images are released.

National retail boss Zac Fried says greater detail on the next stage of a $250 million Maroochydore CBD investment will become available "shortly" as images of how it could look are released to the public.

The Spotlight Group executive deputy chairman had been scheduled to meet on site with Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson on Thursday to officially launch the first stage of his company's Dalton Drive development.

It will feature Australia's largest Spotlight store as well as Anaconda and Harris Scarfe stores.

But he said this week's emergence of a COVID-19 cluster in Melbourne, his home city, put paid to his visit.

Spotlight Group did however release images that showed the next stages of the CBD development.

Mr Fried said discussions were ongoing with SunCentral, Economic Development Queensland and CBD developer Walker Corporation about the stages.

He said once they had progressed further a development application would be lodged.

The images included low rise buildings as well as two towers, which Mr Fried said would likely come later in the building schedule.

He said one tower would be for offices or apartments and the other would be a hotel.

"It's subject to the timing (and) subject to SunCentral completing the roads and other infrastructure," Mr Fried said.

He said the low-rise buildings would house a large format retailer and some smaller complimentary retailers.

"We are talking to a potential large user," Mr Fried said.

He wouldn't say who it was but said it would be the company's first store on the Coast.

His company is also working to lock in a location for a new Caloundra Spotlight while continuing in its Planning and Environment Court bid to expand into Noosaville.

Mr Fried wants to build a Spotlight, Anaconda and potentially a Harris Scarfe in Noosaville.

His company lodged an appeal in February last year against Noosa Council's refusal of an application to set up shop in Hofmann Dr.

He said Spotlight was working with Noosa Council but the appeal would "go the full way" if needed.

"From my point of view we are looking at what is good for the community," Mr Fried said.

He said that included employing up to 150 people.

Meanwhile, he said he was supportive of Sunshine Coast Council's handling of his company's proposals and the potential of the region.

He said the first stage of the Maroochydore development, where building started in November last year, would generate more than 230 full-time jobs during construction and 270 further jobs upon opening.

The stores are hoped to be open early next year.

"We are pretty excited about it."
