A toddler and an infant were among five people taken to the Cairns Base Hospital after a three vehicle crash yesterday.

The crash occurred on the Kennedy Highway at Smithfield around 5.15pm yesterday afternoon.

The driver of a four-wheel-drive, a 31-year-old man, suffered head injuries and the front seat passenger, a 33-year-old woman, suffered a broken hand and cut forehead.

A toddler suffered cuts and bruising and an infant was taken to hospital for observation.

The male driver and sole occupant of the second vehicle suffered bruising and a possible head injury after his car left the roadway and slid a short distance down the range.

The driver of the semi-trailer, a 70-year-old man, received only minor injuries.

Initial inquiries indicate the two cars were travelling west when one collided with the east bound truck.

The highway was closed for over five hours while the scene was cleared.

Police from the Forensic Crash Unit are investigating.

Anyone with information which could assist police with their investigations should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
