Young boy’s 122km walk for worthy cause

A pedometer and a pair of flash blue shoes was all six-year-old Linkon Walker needed to set out on his 122km journey.

A PEDOMETER and a pair of flash blue shoes was all six-year-old Linkon Walker needed to set out on his 122km journey.

The Year 1 Bli Bli State School student said he was grateful for all the wonderful men in his life and wanted to raise money for Movember to send a message that they are appreciated.

"It's for all of the cool men we have in our life for support when they need it," Linkon said.

Being a keen runner Linkon's initial goal was to walk or run 60km during the month of November, but the little legend has now smashed his target, clocking 122km.

The charitable mind could not withhold his excitement, grinning from ear-to-ear, when he said the trek has helped him raise an impressive $688 for the Movember Foundation.

The foundation, known for its iconic Grow a Mo campaign, added the 60km challenge to its fundraising activities in a bid to represent the 60 men lost to suicide every hour.

The primary school student was inspired to take part in the challenge after witnessing his mum's participation.

Linkon's mum Jessica Walker said once Linkon found out about her involvement there was no stopping him.

"At work there is a whole team that do it and he wanted to do it too," Mrs Walker said.

The Suncare Community Services worker was not shocked when the primary school student asked to join in.

"He loves running and moving around and he is probably the kindest person I know so to say he wants to help people isn't unusual," Mrs Walker said.

Stay-at-home dad BJ Walker said being caring was a part of Linkon's nature.

"He is just born that way, he is just a carer and he's always been like it. We are just very lucky," Mr Walker said.

The proud parents said once Linkon hit the 60km target he did not want to stop.

"He wanted to keep increasing his target, but we thought 122km is probably enough," Mrs Walker said.

Funds raised for the Movember Foundation help the organisation tackle prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
