Premier Steven Miles says Labor can win the state election amid widespread support for its “signature” cost of living policy.
His optimism comes following a strong response to the 50c fare trial which he has pledged to make permanent.
Mr Miles in April candidly revealed it was “very likely” he would lose the election and David Crisafulli would become premier.
However, internal polling points to a closer contest in some of the 14 most marginal seats Labor needs to win.
“Of course I think we can win and I’m fighting every single day to win because the stakes for Queensland are just that high,” Mr Miles said on Monday.
“I am passionate about my vision for this state. I have spent every day as premier out and about talking to Queenslanders and delivering for them.”
The government was buoyed by the success of its 50c fare trial, prompting both parties to commit to making in permanent.
Mr Miles on Monday attacked Mr Crisafulli’s swift endorsement of the government’s policy.
“What you saw yesterday from David Crisafulli was a rushed thought bubble, an attempt to neutralise one of my signature policies,” he said.
“I think Queenslanders know if they’re looking for a leader who truly believes in almost free public transport … Queenslanders know that’s me.”
The premier added his pledge to make TransLink an independent statutory authority would “take the politics out of timetabling” and better integrate transport services.
Mr Crisafulli and the LNP continue to position themselves as underdogs heading into the state election, with Labor winning 11 of the past 12 state elections.
