A man pushed his wife into a wall and smashed a glass door in a terrifying domestic violence assault that saw concerned neighbours rush to the woman’s rescue.
Police prosecutor Steve de Lissa told the Stanthorpe Magistrates Court that an argument between the couple led to the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, punching a glass door and slicing open his hand.
“The argument continued into the bedroom where he then grabbed the (woman) and pushed her against the wall and she yelled out, ‘get off me’,” Sergeant de Lissa said.
He said the woman’s screams were heard by neighbours who called police.
Both were taken to hospital for medical treatment, with the man receiving attention to a cut hand and the woman examined but noted as “uninjured”.
Defence Lawyer Amber Acreman said her client’s history of alcohol abuse contributed to the offence.
“His wife had locked him out of the house, so he smashed the door to get back in,” Ms Acreman said.
Magistrate Julian Noud said it was a “pretty serious breach” of a domestic violence order, especially given the man was “intoxicated” at the time.
“Your history clearly demonstrates you have a problem with drugs and alcohol,” Mr Noud said.
The man pleaded guilty to contravening a domestic violence order.
He was placed on probation for nine months.
