The Granite Belt’s biggest days for crime line up with the end of the week, leading drivers to rush home and commit risky behaviour, Wallangarra police say.

Statistics show crime rate peak periods in Stanthorpe and Wallangarra are on weekends.

Saturday and Sunday account for more than 50 per cent of offences.

Wallangarra Sergeant Alan Baker said during his time on the job he had seen an overwhelming number of drivers commit speeding offences.

“I generally issue more tickets on a Sunday than any other day,” he said.

“During the afternoon and evening I pick up quite a few offenders.”

Sergeant Baker said he believed drivers committed the risky behaviour as they were eager to get home and prepare for heading back to work on Monday.

Sergeant Baker said the vast majority of speedsters he nabbed on the New England Highway clocked 15 to 30 kilometres over the 100km limit.

“Some of the excuses I hear from drivers is that they thought the speed limit was higher or they needed to go to the toilet,” he said.

Overtaking on double lines and tailgating were also common offences he witnessed while on patrol.
