Southern Downs paramedic given royal nod, named on Queen’s Birthday Honours list

The dedicated ambulance officer said being recognised for his dedication and commitment to the region is the highlight of his career.

Texas paramedic Peter Solomon received an Ambulance Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday 2021 Honours List.

One of the region’s finest paramedics has been celebrated in the Queen’s Birthday 2021 Honours List, recognising the extraordinary lengths paramedics often go to for their patients and their communities.

Texas Ambulance Station officer-in-charge Peter Solomon has worked in the Southern Downs community for nearly 13 years as the sole officer in the small border town.

“Operating on your own is a very different animal and it is nice to be recognised for the work that we do,” he said.

“Apart from the day I qualified, this (award) is probably the highlight of my career.”

Mr Solomon admits working in the small town of Texas presents unique challenges, but is appreciative of the community’s ongoing support.

“The country people genuinely appreciate the service that gets provided to them and … even when things go very badly they know we’re doing the best we can,” he said.

Mr Solomon provides an invaluable service to the region and has continually shown a commitment to providing care to rural communities for more than 18 years.

QAS Commissioner Russell Bowles said the entire service was extremely proud of the three QAS honoraries and their achievements.

“All three officers are held in high esteem by their peers and exhibit a genuine desire to positively impact their patients and the wider community,” Mr Bowles said.

“This prestigious award is a mark of recognition for … Peter’s dedication over a long and distinguished career.”
